Seeing an opportunity to partner with larger venues struggling with low turnout, we built early relationships that secured prime locations for Disko Afrika’s future events. This set the stage for a monthly residency once restrictions lifted.
I used pre-COVID attendance data, location analysis, and insights from Disko Afrika’s founder—a longtime Bali resident—to target venues most likely to rebound. By understanding each venue’s needs, we tailored events to meet capacity and health guidelines, creating partnerships that were both strategic and sustainable.
Disko Afrika’s growth hinged on rebranding Afro music beyond stereotypes and focusing on its universal appeal. Instead of targeting narrow demographics we developed an understanding of Bali’s diverse expat scene; from 20-something entrepreneurs to retirees in their 50s, we focused on shared tastes in style and sound, positioning Afro music as a central force in the island’s nightlife. This inclusive strategy promoted accessibility and helped newcomers feel at home with the genre.
To deepen engagement, we introduced networking activities and discounted entry, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging.
We introduced centralized planning to align staffing with scenario-based forecasts, allowing events to run smoothly and stay within budget. Tools like Eventbrite streamlined operations, tracked spending, and offered real-time solutions to logistical issues.
Previously, all coordination happened through WhatsApp, which often led to confusion and avoidable miscommunication.
After speaking with the community, we found that Instagram was the only platform where people were actively engaging. So, we decided to ditch the website and focus entirely on Instagram for community building.
This shift redefined Disko Afrika’s outreach and created a more personal experience; guests now had to DM to get on the list. That simple change helped drive a 30% growth in attendance by year’s end.

Disko Afrika has grown into Bali’s leading Afro music event, with major venue partnerships including Savaya and La Brisa, two of the island’s top destinations for music and nightlife. What began as a single monthly event has evolved into a broader lineup, including branded experiences like Disko Afrika Presents: Blue Door and AfroJive.
The brand has also moved into large-scale collaborations and multi-day festivals, cementing its role in Bali’s music scene. This growth reflects both a strong community response and Disko Afrika’s ability to elevate Afro music into the island’s mainstream.
By blending cultural education with strategic event planning, Disko Afrika built a loyal, diverse audience—even through the pandemic—positioning itself as a standout force in Bali’s nightlife with a lasting cultural impact.
