Exit Notes

I moved back to America. Sometimes the thought of a DA event is almost enough to make me buy a ticket back to Bali

Problem / Opportunity

During the pandemic, the popular Afro music event, faced several challenges. Health restrictions limited crowd sizes, and as Bali shifted from being a short-term holiday spot to a hub for long-term expats, the event had to constantly evolve to keep returning attendees engaged. With 80% of the target audience unfamiliar with Afro music, building a loyal community and sparking interest was tough.

On top of this, typical event issues like budget overruns, understaffing, and limited networking opportunities added to the complexity. I was brought in to create strategies to address both immediate challenges and long-term growth.

The Solution

We refined their PMF by emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility, creating the "Heartbeat Framework" to break down barriers for newcomers. his strategy introduced attendees to a broader range of Afro music genres—Afrohouse, Amapiano, Kuduro, and Soukous—while fostering a welcoming environment. Through community insights, tailored marketing, and strategic event design, Disko Afrika became a staple in Bali’s nightlife, deepening the connection between music and audience while encouraging cultural exploration.

Setting the brand
up for success

Seeing an opportunity to partner with larger venues struggling with low turnout, we built early relationships that secured prime locations for Disko Afrika’s future events. This set the stage for a monthly residency once restrictions lifted.

I used pre-COVID attendance data, location analysis, and insights from Disko Afrika’s founder—a longtime Bali resident—to target venues most likely to rebound. By understanding each venue’s needs, we tailored events to meet capacity and health guidelines, creating partnerships that were both strategic and sustainable.

2. Diversity in Community

Disko Afrika’s growth hinged on rebranding Afro music beyond stereotypes and focusing on its universal appeal. Instead of targeting narrow demographics we developed an understanding of Bali’s diverse expat scene; from 20-something  entrepreneurs to retirees in their 50s, we focused on shared tastes in style and sound, positioning Afro music as a central force in the island’s nightlife. This inclusive strategy promoted accessibility and helped newcomers feel at home with the genre.

To deepen engagement, we introduced networking activities and discounted entry, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging.

3. Centralized Operations Planning

We introduced centralized planning to align staffing with scenario-based forecasts, allowing events to run smoothly and stay within budget. Tools like Eventbrite streamlined operations, tracked spending, and offered real-time solutions to logistical issues.

Previously, all coordination happened through WhatsApp, which often led to confusion and avoidable miscommunication.

4. Instagram Shift and
Brand Redefinition

After speaking with the community, we found that Instagram was the only platform where people were actively engaging. So, we decided to ditch the website and focus entirely on Instagram for community building.

This shift redefined Disko Afrika’s outreach and created a more personal experience; guests now had to DM to get on the list. That simple change helped drive a 30% growth in attendance by year’s end.

The Impact

Disko Afrika has grown into Bali’s leading Afro music event, with major venue partnerships including Savaya and La Brisa, two of the island’s top destinations for music and nightlife. What began as a single monthly event has evolved into a broader lineup, including branded experiences like Disko Afrika Presents: Blue Door and AfroJive.

The brand has also moved into large-scale collaborations and multi-day festivals, cementing its role in Bali’s music scene. This growth reflects both a strong community response and Disko Afrika’s ability to elevate Afro music into the island’s mainstream.

By blending cultural education with strategic event planning, Disko Afrika built a loyal, diverse audience—even through the pandemic—positioning itself as a standout force in Bali’s nightlife with a lasting cultural impact.
